Conditions.

I’m consistently shocked at the appalling conditions that organizations force their servers to operate in... hot, dusty, cluttered corners or closets, surrounded by piles of cables and loose techno-detritus.

  • Servers need to be:

    • Protected, yet accessible to authorized staff.
That means behind a locked door.

    • In a “comfortable climate.” Comfortable for a computer that is…
      Meaning about 60º68º F (15º20º C)
      Minimal amounts of dust.
      Good air circulation.

    • Quickly accessible.
Meaning easy access to the sides that matter.
On a G4 today that means front, side and back.
